The two halves of your import budget
Think of JDM import Canada pricing in two buckets. First is the vehicle itself: what you pay at Japanese auction plus yen side fees. Second is everything to get that car to your driveway: our BLI service package, ocean freight, taxes, insurance, and registration. Japanese vehicles are duty free. Euro cars from Japan still carry import duty. We quote both buckets before you approve a bid so you can compare apples to apples against local used market prices.
Commission based exporters often hide margin inside the vehicle price. Beyond Limits Imports uses flat fee pricing starting at $1,250 CAD with zero commission on the car. That transparency is the whole point.
1. Japanese auction purchase price
Auction sale price varies wildly by model, grade, mileage, and market hype. Examples we see regularly in 2026:
- Kei trucks (Suzuki Carry, Honda Acty): often ¥300,000 to ¥800,000 at auction
- Skyline GTS-T or similar sports sedans: ¥1,000,000 to ¥2,500,000 depending on chassis
- Supra MK4, Evo, or GT-R: ¥3,000,000 and up for clean examples
On top of hammer price, budget auction house fees, inland Japan transport to port, and export documentation. We convert everything to CAD at the exchange rate on invoice date and show you the math line by line.
2. BLI service packages (from $1,250 CAD)
Our import packages cover sourcing, auction sheet translation, inspection before purchase, bidding, customs coordination, and port release support. Three tiers exist:
Standard
Best if you have import experience and can collect at port. Includes inspection, bidding, logistics, and customs. Starting at $1,250 CAD.
Premium
Everything in Standard plus Canada wide delivery coordination. Free local delivery on Vancouver Island, Vancouver, and surrounding areas.
Turn Key
Premium plus full BC registration, post arrival inspection, and road ready handoff. Ideal for first time importers who want one point of contact through ICBC.
None of these tiers include commission on the vehicle purchase price. You pay what the auction charges, plus our disclosed flat fee.
3. Ocean shipping and port fees
Roll on roll off shipping from Japan to Vancouver or Nanaimo typically runs $1,200 to $2,000 CAD depending on vehicle size and current freight rates. Port handling, terminal fees, and storage (if you delay pickup) add on. Oversize SUVs like Hilux Surf or Land Cruiser Prado sit at the higher end.
4. Customs duty
Good news for JDM buyers: vehicles manufactured in Japan enter Canada duty free under the Canada Japan Economic Partnership Agreement. That covers the Skylines, Supras, Evos, kei trucks, and Hilux Surfs most clients import through BLI.
Euro vehicles sourced from Japanese dealer stock are a different story. BMW, Porsche, Lotus, and similar imports still carry federal duty, commonly 6.1% on the customs value. We flag which category your car falls into before you bid and file customs entries as part of logistics either way.
5. GST and provincial tax
Federal GST (5%) applies on the taxable import value plus applicable service fees. On Japanese vehicles there is no duty in that calculation. Euro imports include duty before GST. Provincial sales tax hits at registration:
- BC: PST on vehicle value at registration (varies by vehicle class; luxury surtax may apply on high value imports)
- Alberta: no PST, GST only at import
- Ontario, Quebec, and others: HST or PST rules differ; we flag your province early so you budget correctly
Tax is often the largest single landed cost after the vehicle itself. We provide an estimate before you bid, not after the car is already on the water.
6. Insurance and registration
BC requires provincial inspection for most first time imports before ICBC registration. Budget inspection shop fees and any minor compliance work. Insurance quotes depend on your driving record and vehicle class. RHD import Canada sports cars can carry higher premiums; kei trucks used on farm property may differ.
Turn Key clients can hand registration to us entirely. Standard and Premium clients receive guidance and document checklists through the import process.

Kei truck example
¥500,000 purchase (roughly $4,500 to $5,000 CAD at typical exchange rates) + ~$1,250 BLI Standard + ~$2,000 shipping + GST, PST, and registration ≈ high $8,000s to low $10,000s CAD all in for many BC buyers. No import duty on Japanese kei trucks. Kei trucks are small, but RoRo freight still runs about $2,000 once port and handling fees are in.
Mid tier sports sedan example
¥1,800,000 purchase (roughly $16,500 to $17,500 CAD at typical exchange rates) + ~$1,250 BLI package + ~$1,800 shipping + GST, PST, and registration ≈ low to mid $20,000s CAD all in for many BC buyers. That is Skyline GTS-T, Chaser, or similar sports sedan territory, not GT-R money.
High demand GT-R or Supra example
¥4,000,000+ purchase (roughly $37,000 to $40,000 CAD before fees) + BLI package + shipping + taxes ≈ mid to high $40,000s CAD and up depending on exchange rate, trim, and auction heat. Market price at Japanese auction matters as much as fees.
Hidden costs to watch for
- Deferred maintenance after arrival. Even clean auction grades may need fluids, tires, or timing service. Budget separately.
- Rust repair. Another reason inspection before purchase matters. See our auction sheet guide.
- Aftermarket parts in Japan. Wheels, exhaust, suspension, and OEM JDM upgrades can be sourced and installed after auction win, before shipping. Quoted separately. See the import process.
- Commission markups. Ask any importer if they take a percentage on top of auction price. We do not.
